WHAT IS HTML?
HTML is what I used to create these pages. Actually, it is what I used to "format" these pages.
HTML stands for HyperText Mark-Up Language. I started out with just plain, simple text, and placed HTML tags around them to, say, make it bold, or perhaps, , or blue, or very large.
This page is set up using a 2-column table with a different color background. Then I added some links to other pages and sites, once again using HTML tags.
To look at the HTML tags of a web page, simply click on View, Document Source. To return, click on the X in the upper right hand corner of your screen. TRY IT NOW.

HOW DO I LEARN?
Don't panic! There are lots of tutorials around to help you learn what all that stuff means. Some are free. Lots of them are on the web. Here's a listing of some of the tutorials I have used:

Excellent training. Videos take you from the planning stage all the way through publishing on the web. Teaches you how to design a web page using HTML tags and a simple text editor like Windows Notepad.
HTML Goodies

Offered by Joe Burns, an excellent teacher.
Start off with the basic tutorial in 7 easy lessons, then delve into all the other tutorials that cover just about anything you want to know about web pages.

WHAT DO I NEED?
The Basics:
- a text editor: Windows Notepad, or,
- a word processor that allows you to save your document to text format with no margins, etc.
- a browser: Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, Chameleon, Mosaic, etc.
- a ftp program: CuteFTP, etc.
Chances are, if you have a computer with Windows on it and you have access to the internet, you already have what you need, with perhaps exception to the ftp program.
What I Use:
Webford - text editor
Cost: FREEEEEE! Just provide a link back to his web site.
It is a text editor that allows me to have more than one document open at once, and it also has a toolbar with HTML tags built in. Very easy to use.
Netscape Navigator - browser
Cost: FREEEEEE! Came with my internet service.
Netscape is widely used, as well as Internet Explorer. I have them both on my computer so I can check my pages in both as not all HTML tags work in both (as you will find out).
CuteFTP - file transfer protocol program
Cost: $35.00, 30-day free trial
Once your pages are ready, you will need a program to allow you access to your "spot" on your server so you can copy your files to there. This "spot" will hold your web page files and make them available to whomever wants to see them.
Paint Shop Pro 5 (w/animator) - graphics manipulation program
Cost: $99.00, 30-day free trial
A very powerful program if you're going to have any kind of graphics on your pages. You can change existing graphics or create new ones from scratch. Can set any color to be transparent.
GIF Construction Set - an animation program
Cost: $20.00, 30-day free trial
Allows you to create your own animated graphics, banners, marquees, backlit text, neon, etc.
HTML Reference Library - a window help file
Cost: FREEEEEEE!
A reference to all HTML tags in the form of a help file that can be used with windows. I created a shortcut to it so I can access it quickly.

WHERE CAN I GET GOOD GRAPHICS & SOUND?
Do searches on the web with the key words - free, graphics, wave, midi, sound, music. One of my favorite sites simply provides links to other sites that offer free stuff. There are lots of links for graphics and sound at that site. Check out CanajunA's Freebies.
I hope the above information will get you started and I've tried to route you through to sites that helped me. Check back as I will always be adding new information. If you have a site that offers graphics, sound, etc., and want a link from here, email me at [email protected]
Happy HTMLing!
